The dreaded W3C standards; This is a topic I’ve been meaning to write about for a while now. With the official launch of Hotcakes New Media, it’s an issue that is once again at the forefront of my decision making process. What the hell is W3C? Why does it matter? And why does it annoy me so much? Read on.

How awesome is this?!? With the new iPhone 3G I can post messages to my blog, complete with live pictures taken right from the phone, from wherever I am.
There are a few features missing from the application, like the ability to add my “read more” link, but overall I am very impressed. Now next time I travel I can post pictures and messages as it happens.
Stay tuned for a review of the new iPhone and a comparison with the older model.

I knew it was bound to happen at some point. I guess in the back of my mind, I still held out hope that my Hackintosh was indestructible. Well, it’s not. And this weekend, it “got sick”. I can’t say it died, because I was able to bring it back, but in updating to the latest 10.5.4 OSX update, my graphics went glitchy. In attempting to fix that by loading new graphics drivers, I temporarily killed my Mac.

This week I will discuss how I plan to integrate a series of Apple products to create a fairly low-cost whole-home audio solution. This will be a two part post, with part 2 to be written after moving in to our new house in December. This post will discuss the theorhetical and technical aspects of implementing the solution, while part 2 will be a hands-on step-by-step guide. So why the iHome? Read on.

This week I’m giving you a double dose of geek goodness. Instead of writing one longer article, I’ve decided to write two smaller articles. I’m doing this because I wanted to write part 2 of the Hackintosh post, but there just isn’t enough information to fill a full article. Be sure to check out the Hackintosh article here. But for now, let’s talk about Microsoft.
You all know I’m an Apple fanboy. Well, that’s not entirely true… I’m a fan of great design; Apple just happens to get it right 99% of the time. As an Interaction Designer, I place a high value on design and the user experience. It’s why I own a Dyson. It’s why I like Affliction Clothing. It’s the reason I use a Mac. It’s why I love my iPhone so much. But recently, I even shocked myself: It’s why I like Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.

As I mentioned in part 1 of this article, I have recently set up Skype as a fully integrated standalone phone system for my everyday use. While many Skype users in Europe or the US have access to great Skype functionality and features, we here in Canada are a little limited by what we can use, but we can still have a fairly workable solution for a decent price. What was my motivation in this little experiment, aside from my incessant need to advance my knowledge and explore new technologies? Money was a factor. I mean, who doesn’t want to save money on phone bills right? Another major factor was my disappointment in current VOIP offerings (both in sound quality and services) and a drive to “make things better”.

Following the huge success of my “How to build your own Mac” article, I’ve decided to start writing these in-depth articles on a bi-weekly basis. I do have a fairly hectic schedule, so it may not be exactly bi-weekly, but I will try to post them regularly. These articles will either be technology (geek) posts, or art essays. This week, we’re going to take a look at telecommunications, including mobile (cell) phones, VOIP and Skype.

Is this a Mac? Or a PC? Or is it both? After countless hours of testing, building, selling, re-testing, researching, and installing, I have been able to find the exact set of PC components that allow me to run a full-fledged Mac with the latest operating system and all features. But more specifically, I have found the parts that do it all
really well. It’s actually pretty easy to get OSX to run on your PC. Any number of cheap computer parts will get you a decent fake Mac. However, as with all PC’s they often do so at the cost of ugliness and noise.
