Enfants Sorciers

This was a book cover illustration I created for an author who had a book published. This was my first commercial illustration work, and it was a joy to see the final printed book.

Abstract Art: Musical Constellation

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Musical Constellation

This watercolor was used in the Union Station Intervention artwork. This work was installed in the photo booth at Union Station in Toronto and left there for people to use as a custom backdrop. The work is no longer there.

This work is loosely based on Kandinsky’s work, but focusing more directly on music notation.

Abstract Art: Improvisation I

Improvisation I - After Kandinsky

This is an abstract work inspired by Kandinsky that was used as a backdrop for my video work “Dreaming in Color”. It was painted randomly, in small sections, and photographed at each interval to “animate” the painting. This was the final result of the painting. The video in question can be seen here:

Slices of Light: Nude At Piano

Nude At Piano

This is my latest piece from my Slices of Light series. This work is a great example of how my Fragmentism style has developed over the previous paintings. This style is much more defined in my mind, and that is reflected in the work. This particular work (and others involving music or other arts) is well suited to the style as it allows me to reverberate the sound through the fractions I create, seemingly allowing the viewer to “see” the music. This work has been accepted to the Muse ‘05 art auction.

Slices of Light: Piano Abstraction

Piano Abstraction

The latest work in my Slices of Light series. I wanted to create a work that was somewhat abstract, but based on “real” elements, like the piano keyboard, and the music note. The abstraction allows me to focus on trying to represend sound waves in a visual style. This is also the first painting in this series in which I used a glazing techique to create a nice rich depth to the color. This piece was donated, and was on display at the Ottawa Home Show in March 2005.

Slices of Light: Piano Study #2

Piano Study #2

This is the second work in the cubist series, and also the second piano study. Kind of a merging of studies hapenning here. I think this is a very successful piece. This work is also the first work I am putting up for sale! Buy it now, and be the first to own an official early A7 art work. Sold.

Slices of Light: The Waltz

The Waltz

This is my final painting of 2004. The work was comissioned by my sister and completed in a week. This work was the most complicated to date as it has no photographical reference. I think it is the most successful work in the series so far, especially in the treatment of the abstraction of the figures into my fragmentism style. The work also has a great sense of movement, with the figure skaters’ circular motion echoed in the circular shapes created in the sky and ice.

Brand new portfolio site!

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

http://www.A7is.com

I’ve set up a new domain and website for posting all my artwork. I needed a centralized place that had a visual impact and an image based navigation system, yet also allowed me to post the artwork’s concept and details. And most importantly, I wanted all that to be RSS trackable, and have comments to boot. The new site is up and running, and I encourage you to view my portfolio at the link above.

My first t-shirt design

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I am about to submit a t-shirt design into a contest to have it printed (and win cool prizes!). I didn’t want to blatantly rip off Affliction’s style, but rather create my own that was influenced by Affliction’s oversized hand drawn prints. The result is a style I like to call “dark whimsical”. Want to see the full t-shirt design? Click the link below.

Hotcakes New Media: Animated Intro

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

In case you haven’t heard, I’ve been getting a number of calls lately for video work, including editing a feature film shot on Red, and producing a docu-drama for the Ontario Parole Board. I’m also in the process of putting together my “client spotlight” pieces that will be featured on the Hotcakes website. I found that I needed to create my little animated intro, similar to the “20th Century” spotlight intro, or the Dreamworks “kid fishing on the moon”. Here’s what I came up with:
