I promised you all something big, so here it is! I invite you to visit Hotcakes New Media, my new video production and design company. There is still a bit of organization left to do before I start taking contracts (getting a business bank account, setting up accounting, and awaiting delivery of my new lighting and chromakey kits) but everything is registered and well underway.
Today marks the official launch of Hotcakes New Media.

With my recent job loss, I’ve had a little more time on my hands, so I thought it was about time I update this site a little more. Now, before you all freak out (if you hadn’t heard about my job situation yet), there’s no reason to panic… The company simply could not afford to pay me a full salary with benefits. I am still working for them on contract, and may have other contract work on the way shortly. I’m fine.
But enough about that, and onto my post. As of last month, I am officially a published artist, passing yet another milestone in my career.

One of the things I’ve always struggled with in my mind is the bridge between the commercial viability of art and staying true to a work’s core ideas. Often, a work needs to be watered down or simplified for the sake of appealing to the masses. If an artist stays true to his or her vision of a work, it’s usually at the cost of commercial success. But what happens if an idea is easily adaptable to be used in a commercial way? Should the artist forego the commercial idea in order to preserve integrity, or should the artist pursue it at the risk of diluting the original artwork upon which it was built?

In order to reduce the stuff we have to pack (and subsequently keep in storage for 6 months), I decided to do some purging of old crap I didn’t need any longer. In the process of going through my computer CDs, I came across a backup disc from my PC days (i.e. from a LONG time ago). On MC’s insistence, I popped in the CD to see what was on it, and came across a little gem of a video.

You may be wondering why this is posted in the Art News section. I debated this with myself for a while, but in the end, this news is in fact art related.
As many of you know, I make a very clear separation when it comes to art and design. I strongly believe art is created by the artist, based on the artist’s concept with no outside influences or pressure, and fully developed with no financial gain as motivation. Design on the other hand, as artistic as it may be, is always created with another person’s motivation and objective in mind, often, but not exclusively for, financial gain. So why is this post Art News?
