How to build your own Mac
With the DVD in the drive, and the case all closed up, turn on the machine. Eventually, you will see something pop-up asking to press a key or enter options. Press F8 to enter options. Then type “-v -x” (minus v, space, minus x) and press enter. This will begin the setup process. The startup will take quite a while as it has a lot to load from the DVD drive. Expect it to take a good 5-8 minutes. You should then see a welcome screen asking you to select your language. After you select your language, it will continue to load for a minute, then bring you to the main install screen. Now we have to format your hard drive. In the top menu bar, select “disk utility”. The disk utility will load. You should see your hard drive listed on the left. Click on it and select the partition tab. Click on the drop down menu with “current” and select “1 partition”. Then click options and select GUID. Name your drive (“Hard Drive” is fine) and click partition. When it’s done, you can quit the disk utility. Now it’s time to install OSX. Go through the install screens, selecting your hard drive, until you see “customize”. Click on the Customize button and select “vanilla kernel”. Expand all the other options (click the little triangle). Select the NATIT (1900 series) for video if you have the recommended ATI X1900XT. Then select Azalia audio and select “GUID” at the bottom. Now proceed with the install. It will pop up and ask to check the DVD… you can click skip and it will start the installation faster.
Now sit back, relax, and hope it installs. It might not… it’s a little finicky that way. If it fails, just reboot, and start the install again. You don’t have to do the disk utility steps the second time around.
When it’s all done installing, it should reboot and bring you up to the actual operating system. Just go through the setup process just like on a real Mac and enjoy your blazing fast new system! You’re all done!**
**Note: There are other things you should do, like overclock the system, restore the system defaults and create a new user, and install some essential software… but I’ll leave that for another post. If you are interested in seeing the follow-up post, add a comment here so I can see if there’s interest.
Enjoy!
